Do we have a compassionate heart?

Poor and the weak cry helplessly

It was a heart breaking news yesterday to hear about a pregnant immigrant lady from Nigeria who travelled with her husband to find new life in another country. She had documents but her husband did not. When border police approached them she not willing to leave her husband alone told the officials that she also did not have the visa. She was asked to get back to her own country but on the way she gave birth to a baby.  But due to the severe cold and exhaustion her body developed infections and she died leaving the baby and her husband behind.

In an another incident there were two asylum seekers supported by a concern filled local person. He led them into a safe place to survive but was imprisoned and lost his good job. Now after 5 years of imprisonment he will have to start searching for a job opportunity to survive.

In all of us deep inside (we may term it as our conscience) there is a sense of humanity, concern for the needy and responsibility. It is given to us by the Creator God as belonging to our nature as human person. But there are some in whom this collective sense of responsibility and concern for the other is less felt or not listened to. Growing individualistic attitude of thinking only about one’s family, culture, religion, race, language and one’s own country’s well-being is due to the lack of understanding about the true nature of life.
Yes we all have a compassionate heart. It is said that Jesus Christ was moved with compassion when he saw the people who came to meet him with various needs. “God give me the compassion to consider every life as my own,” was the heart’s prayer of Thaayumanavar a Tamil Mystical Poet from India. True sages laugh at people and nations that are unduly selfish, ruthlessly aggressive, callously exploitative of Mother nature and wage war to do business. Thanks to all those generous heroes of our time who think about the needy and the poor although their own nations are over burdened with commitments.
